Norfolk Southern Railroad Avtec StoryNorfolk Southern Railway Selects AVTEC Scout Consoles To Modernize Northern Division Train Dispatch Centers.

Gilbert, South Carolina, May 8, 2009 – The Norfolk Southern Railway has awarded a contract to Avtec for Scout Console Systems to modernize their three Northern Divisional Train Dispatch Centers. A fourth system will be located in the Southeast to serve as a Disaster Recovery site.

Scout is Avtec’s innovative and flexible VoIP console system, which has now been deployed in over 30 command centers for Railroads, Airport Operations, Public Safety, and Utility applications since its launch in 2008. It eliminates the need for a central switch by leveraging existing network infrastructure as part of a distributed console architecture. Scout works with Avtec’s VoIP Protocol Gateway (VPGate), Outpost radio base station controllers, and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) telephony devices to provide an interoperable, standards-based console system.

More and more Console users are recognizing the benefits of our scalable and proven VoIP Console system. Since Scout supports both proprietary and open radio interfaces with a flexible plug-in driver based gateway, customers are assured they are buying a future-proof solution stated Avtec President Michael Branning.

The Norfolk Southern Scout systems average fourteen Dispatcher console positions and over one-hundred radio base stations each. They will use SIP for telephony and Outposts to interface to radio base stations. Installations are slated to begin in July of 2009. This award marks Phase 1 of a multi-year, multi-site modernization program.
