Avtec Security Advisory

Cyber Attack/WannaCry/Ransomware Impacting Legacy Microsoft Windows Platforms including Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003

Last Updated: June 1, 2017

Overview

At Avtec, we take console system security very seriously. On Monday, May 15, 2017, we were informed of a major cybersecurity breach generated by “WannaCry” ransomware. This malicious software exploits vulnerabilities in legacy Microsoft platforms including Windows® XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003. Customers running Windows 10 were not targeted by the attack. Additional guidance is available from the Microsoft web site: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/msrc/2017/05/12/customer-guidance-for-wannacrypt-attacks/.

What Avtec is Doing

Since learning of the vulnerability, we have taken the proper measures to investigate potential impacts to our systems, and have determined no patches for Avtec’s Scout™ voice dispatching platform are required.

Clients with active ScoutCare™ service contracts are eligible to receive a free upgrade to Scout version 4.3, which includes enhanced security features such as Scout management audit reports. This allows the tracking of administrator logins, failed administrator login attempts, configuration changes made in Scout manager, and project deployments.

What You Need To Do

Organizations that use legacy Windows® XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003 platforms require a patch from Microsoft. Please download and install Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010 to be fully protected.

As a precautionary measure, if you are using other products or services alongside the Avtec system, you should address any concerns with these providers for guidance on how to proceed with their products.

ScoutCare Amnesty Program Available Until 12/31/2017

As part of our service commitment to our customers, we want to remind you about Avtec’s amnesty program for clients who have allowed their ScoutCare contracts to expire. This program, effective 1/1/2017 through 12/31/2017, waives the customary fees associated with reactivating lapsed service contracts. Please contact your Avtec sales representative or authorized Avtec reseller with any questions about your ScoutCare service contract.
